Commercial Fisheries

WCS and the Fisheries Administration (FiA) have completed a review of Fishing Lot 2, which is the largest Fishing Lot on the Tonle Sap Lake, and which overlaps with one of the Core Areas of the Tonle Sap Biospehere Reserve. The Prek Toal Core Area is home to breeding colonies of some of the world's most endangered waterbird species.

Considerable debate persists over the various forms of management that are appropriate for areas of the Tonle Sap Great Lake, not least where commercial fishing concessions (called 'Fishing Lots') and conservation areas overlap.

The study used social, environmental, economic and spatial analytical techniques to better understand the conservation, commercial and socio-economic importance of the two areas. This analysis will facilitate an improved understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of the respective management systems of both the Fishing Lot and the Prek Toal Core Area, developing recommendations for adaptation where appropriate.
